Weight Loss In Women: When Should You Worry?

Not many women would be worried if they lost a few pounds. As a matter of fact, most women would be thrilled to get on the scale today and find out that they've been losing weight-especially if they haven't done anything to promote such a change. But the truth is that unexplained weight loss in women could be a sign of something more serious.

During the teenage years, weight fluctuation-up or down-can be a perfectly normal side effect of adolescent growing pains. But if your teenage girl is losing weight at a rapid pace then these could be signs of:

• Depression
• Anorexia Nervosa
• Bulimia
• Gastrointestinal diseases

Unexplained weight loss in women can occur at any time in a woman's life. If you notice that you've been losing a lot of weight for no reason, get to your doctor and have them check for the following, especially if you have been experiencing digestion problems, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain as these symptoms could point to:

• Stomach ulcer
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Chronic liver disease
• Malabsorption
• Diabetes Type 2
• Hyperthyroidism
• Cancer of the stomach, gallbladder, pancreas or liver
• Endocrine disorders

There are also traumas and mental issues that might affect a woman's weight loss, such as grief, post-traumatic stress disorder, or depression. Obviously, any weight loss during pregnancy should be investigated.

A woman's body goes through an enormous amount of changes during menopause - probably more than at any other time since adolescence and pregnancy. While weight gain is a perfectly natural side effect of menopause, some weight loss can occur - and can be a sign of a hormone imbalance that should be corrected with medication.

Older women can also suffer from excessive weight loss for a variety of reasons:

• Ill-fitting dentures
• Alzheimer's
• Dementia
• Stroke
• Neglect
• Difficulty preparing meals
• Inability to purchase food, whether because of money problems or physical problems

Just like you have to be vigilant with teenage daughters, so to must you take care to notice any significant weight changes in the elderly women in your life. While the reason for unexplained weight loss in older women might not necessarily be health related, it can be medication related. If she forgets to tell her doctor about all the medications she might be taking, the doctor might prescribe something that counteracts or reacts badly, causing weight loss.

Tips on Getting a Smooth Shave

For both boys and girls, it is a step towards adulthood to be able to shave. This means you are maturing and getting closer to adulthood. Learning how to shave, though, can be enjoyable. You'll learn how to shave by following these directions.

You will need:

Cream or gel for shaving
A sharp razor, needs to be new
Water, at a comfortable temperature (not too hot or cold)
Clean towel

1. Cleanse your skin and exfoliate. Whether this is the first time you shave your legs or face, you will have a better chance of a close shave when you begin with a clean area. Use an exfoliating soap. This step will get rid of any dead skin and actually lift the hair away from your skin. It will also help prevent bacteria build up that leads to razor burn and ingrown hairs.

2. You must always prepare your skin properly, with warm water. Your skin must be warm and moist before you start to shave. Whenever you can it is better to shave the same time as you shower so you can let your skin soak in hot water for several minutes before you begin.

3. Lather up with a shaving cream or gel. Squeeze some gel into your palm and then put a slight layer over your skin. Don't rub, just apply, a thin coat of gel to the area you are looking to shave.

4. Decide on the point you will start. For your legs, generally women will begin shaving around the ankle area. Men shave downward starting above the top of the hair on your cheek or jaw.

5. Use long, smooth strokes when shaving. Shaving should not be rushed. You are less likely to injure yourself when the razor is new and your strokes are even.

6. After every stroke, take time to rinse. Your razor can become clogged and lose its sharpness if you are too rough on one stroke. As a reminder, be sure to run the razor under warm water to clean it between swipes. This will take out the hair that gets tangled behind the blade and any extra shaving cream.

7. Be sure to catch difficult-to-reach spots. Some sections of the face or leg will be harder to shave than others so slow down and be gentle. On the face these might be the chin, top lip and any part close to the nose. When it comes to women the knees, ankles and bikini line are difficult.

8. Shave the area until it is very soft and smooth. Considering how thick and how much your hair grows you might need to shave each area more than one time. Run a hand over the area to be sure it is completely smooth.

9. Use warm water for rinsing. Wash off with warm water to remove cut hairs and any remaining shaving lotion, once finished. You should clean the skin but not use soap because it could irritate your skin.

10. Gently pat dry, don’t rub. Rubbing your skin dry cause irritation so be sure to just blot it with a clean towel. Don’t apply lotions or creams for a few minutes so that you don’t cause bumps or redness. Shaving causes the hair follicles to lift up and the pores to open so applying lotion too soon causes it to seep into the pores to cause irritation.

With patience, shaving is simple. Just remember to use slow and controlled strokes and you will be able to shave without cutting or nicking yourself.

Muscle Fitness Can Yoga Make You Stronger?

Many people wonder if yoga can improve their Muscle Fitness. They recognize that yoga can help reduce stress and increase flexibility, but when it comes to increasing Muscle Fitness, they think it might be a little too 'weak' to do the job. The fact is that yoga can definitely make you stronger.

A study was conducted at the University of California at Davis. Ten college 'coach potatoes' adopted a yoga routine for eight weeks. Each week, they attended from two to four classes during which they spent 10 minutes on breath control, 15 minutes of warm up Exercises, 50 minutes doing yoga asanas, and then 10 minutes of relaxation/mediation. At the end of the eight-week period, the researchers measured the students' fitness and discovered that their muscular strength had increased by up to 31%, their muscular endurance improved by 57%, their flexibility increased by 188%, and their cardio respiratory fitness improved by 7%. These results are pretty amazing when you consider that the study was only conducted for eight weeks.

How can something that seems so benign have such a major impact on muscle fitness?

MUSCLE STRENGTH - Unlike traditional weight building Exercises, in yoga your body provides the resistance. While you are not likely going to produce the bulked up muscles of some weight lifters, you will certainly increase your muscle strength.

Many poses in yoga are done very slowly or you stay in the posture for several breaths. It is much more challenging to your muscles to hold a pose or do it slowly than it is to allow momentum to move you through an action. I have been working out with weights for many years so my muscles are used to being strengthened. Yet, I have practiced certain yoga routines during which my muscles screamed for mercy and I actually had to get out of the pose and then resume it because my muscles were so challenged. I don't often experience this during Weight Training sessions.

In addition, some balance postures such as Tree Pose and Shoulderstand require enormous muscle control in order to prevent you from falling over. This helps to build and strengthen your muscles.

MUSCLE BALANCE - In Weight Training, you isolate a specific muscle as you perform an exercise and this leads to a short, tightened muscle. The muscles you develop during yoga are more likely to be elongated, because while you are strengthening them, you are simultaneously lengthening them. You also do not focus on an isolated muscle, but actively recruit the smaller muscle groups as well. You truly work your entire body when you practice yoga.

Practicing yoga can help realign your muscles, so they are more balanced. Since you are not overworking any specific muscle group, you are less likely to get injured.

In addition to all its other benefits, yoga can help you improve muscle fitness. Whether you choose to use it as your primary means of Strength Training or you want it to supplement your other exercises, yoga can help your muscles grow fit, balanced, and strong.
